"Why did the invasion of Iraq result in cultural destruction and killings of intellectuals? Convention sees accidents of war and poor planning in a campaign to liberate Iraqis. "Western academia has no tools to handle State destruction. In the 1960's till today we have Development Studies and State Building as a distinct area of study. What we don't have is a branch of state destruction and re-development. We hope that Cultural Cleansing in Iraq will begin to put this right. Allow me to indulge my position as the writer of this short piece. War by the big powers is always undertaken for noble rationales, freedom from oppression, democracy instead of tyranny and such words justify our acts of barbarity. We all need to keep clear minds, behind the high minded rhetoric; war is always undertaken by the wealthy against poorer, weaker peoples for base reasons, money, and power. The issue is only what wealth and what power. The Iraqi invasions were to open up the oil fields to Western and mainly American firms, everyone now knows this; and for power, to create huge American bases, so that air and land, military power, can be mobilised against across the entire Arab world, and even beyond at very short notice. This book shows the evidence that modern empire is the tyranny for which millions of Iraqis have been sacrificed."

ــ"صدر عن دار الشروق بالقاهرة النسخة العربية لكتاب "التطهير الثقافي في العراق: لماذا نهبت المتاحف، وحرقت المكتبات وقتل الأكاديميون" بالتزامن مع صدور النسخة الإنجليزية الصادرة عن دار "بلوتو برس" للنشر.وهذا الكتاب أول محاولة أكاديمية للبحث في ملامح الدمار الإنساني والثقافي على العراق والناجم عن الغزو الأنجلو- أمريكي للعراق، فالمشاركين في الكتاب ومحرريه أكاديميين من أصحاب الباع بالبحث الأكاديمي في مجالاتهم.ويقوم الكتاب على افتراض أن المحو، النهب، الحرق، والقتل والتفكيك تمثل حربا لا تقل أهمية عن عمليات "الصدمة والترويع" فما زلنا نحمل في ذاكرتنا صور الحرائق والنهب المنظم لمؤسسات الدولة من متاحف ومكتبات ودور الأرشيف القومي وسجلات تاريخ الدولة الحديثة في العراق وتشتت ملايين العراقيين من أبناء الطبقة المتعلمة الذين كانت الدولة تقوم بهم وتعتمد عليهم.ومن أجل الهيمنة كان لا بد من قتل العقول أو تجفيفها وحرق المكتبات وسرقة السجلات الوطنية، وإعداد القوائم المرشحة للقتل أو الاستفزاز أي إعادة العراق إلى عام الصفر.ويرى الباحثون أن كل القرارات التي اتخذها الحاكم المدني بول بريمر من القرار الأول إلى القرار 99 تصب باتجاه تجريد العراق من هويته وتهميش دوره في المنطقة كحارس للقومية العربية ومدافع عن القضية الفلسطينية وحقوق الفلسطينيين.ويكتب الباحثون عن مسئولية الاحتلال عن هذا الدمار سواء بالوقوف متفرجا أمام الفوضى أو بالمساهمة في التدمير من خلال تشويه المعالم الأثرية التي احتفظ بها العراق ونجت من كل الكوارث التي حلت على بلاد الرافدين مثل بنائه القواعد العسكرية في المعالم الأثرية كما حدث في بابل واور ونينوى.ويؤكد الكتاب أن كل السياسات التي مورست من قبل الاحتلال كانت حرباً داخلية في مجال التطهير الثقافي إن كان هذا ببناء قواعد عسكرية على بقايا الحضارات القديمة في بلاد الرافدين.من بين السياسات الأكثر همجمية كما يكشف الكتاب كانت سياسة اجتثاث البعث التي أدت إلى حرمان قطاع واسع من الحرفيين والمؤهلين والكفاءات من وظائفهم وأدت بالنهاية إلى الاستهداف المنظم للعقول العراقية التي تمت من خلال استراتيجيتين الأولى: القتل المستهدف والثانية: الاعتقال والتعذيب اضافة إلى الترهيب والتخويف الذي قاد إلى هروب عديد من العلماء من العراق ليواجهوا مصيرا قاتما حيث أصبح الكثير منهم عمالا سخرة، يبيعون الخضار ويسوقون السيارات من أجل النجاة."ـ
